MEMO

Hi Merasheeners,

Well, from all accounts it seems as if our Garden Party was a huge success. It was hard for it to be anything else with the large amount of support given to us by fellow Merasheeners who went all out in helping us make soups, cakes, etc. putting in hours with helping to decorate, run the booths, man the dory races, organize the Cat game, barbecue, plus any other task that was required we thank you all.

One of the most pleasing sights for me was to see the number of seniors who thoroughly enjoyed meeting up with each other to have a chat along with a cup of tea and cake. We also heard the comments that people actually got to see and have conversation with everyone from one end of the Island to the other. There were a number of new people who visited from out of the province and experienced a small segment of life in outport Placentia Bay and went away with special memories.

We also had positive feedback from the children, who will be our next generation of Merasheeners, who will want to come back to the Island. It was nice to see young men and woman participate in our Garden Party who came out to the Island as toddlers for the first time back in the 1980’s and now carry on the tradition.

We would like to say a special thank you to the following:

  • To the people who participated in our concert. They did a fantastic job. Some of these individuals made a special effort to be on the Island after being contacted about the variety concert and traveled some distance to perform for us.
  • To the band. Eric Connors, Kevin Pomroy and Eugene Pittman. As usual you put a special flavor to the night. Over the years we could always depend on these men to give a great live performance with some traditional songs and some new ones as well.
  • To Eugene Pittman and his son Mike who transported all our equipment across the bay and went the extra mile in helping us to offload all the garden party supplies, tables and chairs and seeing it all got to the Centre.
  • We would like to offer everyone who helped in any way and all of you who made the journey across the bay to be with us a heartfelt thank you. It is impossible to thank everyone individually. I wish that were possible, but there are too many and we wouldn’t want to omit someone in error. . Without you the garden party would not have been the success it was.
  • Last but not least I would like to thank the other members of the committee who came together on such short notice and jumped in with both feet, Lucy Counsel, Doreen Ennis, Evelyn Ennis and Edna Pittman. Thanks girls, you did an awesome job.

Doreen Ennis has been our treasurer and is attaching a copy of the statement with this letter. As you will notice we do have a balance left which will be set up in an account.

Once again the winners of the tickets:

GPS - Peter Hoskins -Torbay 2nd prize $100.00 - Brian Philpott – Kilbride

We feel the community centre in Merasheen would be better equipped to holding events if it had washroom facilities. This is a must for seniors, and a necessity for all of us (especially women, to be sexist). We would like to do a fundraiser or two to make this a reality.

Thank you for your time, we will keep you updated.

Valerie Power On behalf of the Garden Party Committee
