Come watch the final film in the "Vanished in the Mist" series entitled "The Tidal Waves - 1929 and on."
The film touches on life in Newfoundland after 1929, including the Burin Tsunami, events during the Second World War, as well as confederation with Canada and the cod moratorium in 1992. "In the years from 1929, one massive wave after another has rocked the island, and Newfoundland has been transformed."
Enjoy some tea and sweets afterwards, not to mention some wonderful company! See you there!

Hello People of Merasheen!
On Saturday, August 11, 2012 we extend a special invitation to our living seniors ages 75 and up to gather with us on Merasheen Island. We want to honor your legacy and thank you for giving us life, roots, faith and pride of place. Fr. William Hann would like to get a papal blessing done for our ancestors. If anyone would like to get one for their parent please email him at fatherwilliam@shaw.ca. The cost is $45 for each blessing. The day will include games, ring toss, mass at 4pm followed by pot luck and an evening of song and no doubt dance.

Placentia 7th Annual Santa Claus Parade
This year’s parade is scheduled for Saturday, December 3, 2011. Participants will line-up at 2pm for 3pm departure. In the event of inclement weather, the parade will be held the following day. The parade will commence at the College of the North Atlantic, proceed down Prince William Drive, up Orcan Drive, onto Patterson Drive and into the Town Square. Culture Days...Through the Lens of Your Camera
Day 1:
On Saturday October 1st join photographer Scott Batten and artist
Christopher Newhook for Placentia’s first ever Worldwide Photo Walk as part
of Culture Days. The walk is open to anyone interested in photography,
regardless of age or experience. Come out and meet other photography
enthusiasts, explore the photographic opportunities of this historic town,
learn, share and most of all have fun. The walk will begin in the parking
lot at Laval High at 2:00. After the walk we will meet at the Harold Hotel
for refreshments and prize draw.
Day 2:
Interested in learning how to take better photos? Want to learn more about
your D-SLR or compact digital camera? On Sunday October 2nd, 2:00 at Castle
Hill National Historic Site join with the group for an informal workshop on
photographic techniques and camera use as you peruse a slide show of the
Photo Walk participants' images. Everyone is welcome and bring your camera

On Saturday, November 06, 10:00a – 2:00p, Justin Dearing and MI Ocean Net will host a slideshow and discussion at the Cultural Arts Centre in Placentia. Following the presentation, youth and community volunteers will head out to clean up Placentia Beach and Jerseyside Beach. After the cleanup, there will be a family BBQ! All volunteers get free t-shirts!
This is part of MI Ocean Net’s “Friends of Beaches” project. Everyone of us can make a difference and it’s time to take action!

The O'Reilly House Museum will have an extended season this year. Because of a partnership with the Placentia Area Theatre d'Heritage the Placentia Area Historical Society has announced the museum will be operating until October 8th.
Opening hours are from 1 to 5 p.m. on weekdays. The museum will be closed on weekends.

2012 Placentia Intertown Come Home Year Committee Invites Public Participation
From July 20th to July 29th, 2012, the Placentia Intertown Come Home Year Committee will be hosting a spectacular “Calendar of Events”, to welcome visitors from home and abroad to our region and to join us in a celebration of the richness of our multinational history over the past 500 years. Many European fishing vessels sailed into Placentia Bay since the 15th century, flying the flags of the international community - Basques, Spain, Portugal, France, Ireland, England and in the 20th century, the United States of America came to Argentia.
The Placentia Intertown Come Home Year Committee is inviting you to a Public Meeting on Monday, February 13th, 2012, at 7:30pm at the Placentia Bay Cultural Arts Center to share and to learn more about our community celebrations this summer. All interested person/s from Ship Harbour – Placentia and area – and out to Great Barrasway, are invited to attend this informative session.
To enhance the celebrations of our unique history, the committee is collecting Flags from every Community / Province /Country, please contact every member of your family who is living away and invite them to help out with this effort. All flags donated to the Come Home Year Committee will be on display during the 2012 Come Home Year Calendar of Events.
